4.5 Break Down Complex Tasks
“Organize an event for me” hides many tasks: confirm the goal, attendance, time, and budget; create options; compare tradeoffs; obtain a decision; and prepare a notice. Asking for everything at once can hide missing information and errors inside an attractive finished product.
The purpose of decomposition is not to add ceremony. It gives each step a clear input, checkable output, and owner.
Steps have dependencies
An invitation depends on an approved date and option. Comparing options depends on having candidates. Without the earlier result, the later step can only guess. A sound workflow completes dependencies before proceeding.
After decomposition, divide responsibilities. AI can organize requirements, generate candidates, and prepare a comparison. A person approves the budget, chooses an option, and authorizes external communication. Keep human checkpoints for high-impact or irreversible actions.
If a task remains confusing, ask AI to “propose a plan only; do not execute.” Review the plan before proceeding step by step.
