Price Elasticity of Supply
Price elasticity of supply measures the response of quantity supplied to price:
Supply is more elastic when producers can expand easily. Spare capacity, available inputs, storable inventory, and adjustment time raise responsiveness; fixed land, production lags, and capacity ceilings restrict it.
Time changes feasible adjustments
Tonight's concert seat supply is nearly fixed even if price jumps. Over two years, organizers can add performances, build capacity, and enter. The same product therefore has different short- and long-run elasticity.
| Factor | Less elastic | More elastic |
|---|---|---|
| horizon | short | long |
| spare capacity | little | substantial |
| storage | perishable | inventory available |
| inputs | specialized | readily available |
Use midpoint percentages to calculate supply elasticity just as for demand, normally without an absolute value because price and quantity supplied move together. A flatter graph often signals greater response, but slope is not elasticity. Farming lags, land approvals, and scalable digital services create very different empirical values.

The same product can have inelastic short-run supply and elastic long-run supply. Firms can schedule overtime now, but later they can build plants, train workers, and enter. At extremes, vertical supply is perfectly inelastic and horizontal supply perfectly elastic.
KNOWLEDGE QUIZ
Hotel rooms this summer and later
A resort's room rate rises from 100 to 120. Its initial supply is 100 room-nights per day. Extra staffing permits 105 this summer; conversion and construction permit 140 in five years. Hold other influences fixed for this exercise.
Same price change; quantities 100→105 short run and 100→140 long run.
- Compute both midpoint supply elasticities.
- List feasible adjustments and constraints at each horizon.
- Explain why a longer horizon need not remove all limits, and why quantity offered differs from actual occupancy.
